Ottawa basements present unique challenges because of the region's high water table and clay-heavy Leda soil, which means moisture management must be integrated into any soundproofing plan. Insulating basement walls with mineral wool on decoupled steel stud framing serves the dual purpose of sound isolation and thermal performance, which matters in a city where winter temperatures regularly drop below minus twenty-five.

Plumbing drain lines running through basement ceilings are a major noise source and can be wrapped with mass loaded vinyl and acoustic pipe lagging to reduce the sound of water rushing through ABS waste pipes. Ductwork penetrations through the ceiling assembly must be sealed with acoustic caulking and fitted with flexible boots to prevent flanking noise that bypasses an otherwise well-built sound barrier.
